My coleagues used ~3mm diameter, but the manufactured EMC probes use more like a 2mm diameter attached to a 6mm coaxial shaft terminated in a BNC connector. I believe mine are specified at 1 or 2 GHz but I have used them at 4GHz without issues.
They are very useful indeed and I have been surprised at the frequencies at which they will provide a useful signal. I have a professional set of these probes that came with an SA that I purchased.
